Two lovers have a painful dispute which causes the woman to retreat (to an island) and put some "spiritual" distance between her and her man. This also could be a situation where some painful memories from the woman's past come to the surface and she is hiding from her man because she thinks he is the reason for the pain (when it's really something unresolved from her past abuse). The man, still very much in love with her, gently starts singing her this song using reverse psychology to try and win her back ("don't answer me, don't break the silence, don't let me win") and with a little prayer, maybe he will win - but it's not about winning - it's simply about him trying to show her that he still deeply loves her and if she can see through the lies /pain, she'll eventually make it back to him. (and as the music video goes, I'm glad she does).
