At the age of 18, Jaylen Smith made history by being elected as the mayor of Earle, Arkansas. His victory on Tuesday night, Dec. 6, solidified his position as the youngest Black mayor in the United States.
Smith’s remarkable achievement came after defeating Nemi Matthews Sr. in a runoff election.
With 218 votes, Smith emerged victorious over Matthews, who received 139 votes, according to the election results.
Sharing his excitement, Smith took to Facebook to announce his win, expressing his gratitude to the supporters who played a crucial role in his victory. In his post, he stated, “Citizens of Earle, Arkansas, it’s official!! I am your newly elected Mayor of Earle, Arkansas… ‘It’s Time to Build a Better Chapter of Earle, Arkansas.’ I would like to thank all my supporters for stepping up and getting people to the polls. I am truly grateful for you all.”
